Quotable

"(T)he degree of duplicity going on just depresses the living hell out of me."

Frankly, I wish Dan was a louder voice on this. Less out-sourcing and Salma, more anti-Addingtonism and anti-Yooism!

I should think one could get in more anti-Addington, anti-Yoo stuff without less Salma.

Oh, and hey -- _less_ outsourcing? What the hell is wrong with you? Drezner's stuff on outsourcing is great, and there is a real problem of people's perceptions there that he does a great job controlling. OK, we both feel less strongly about it than the torture stuff --- but it's real real important and Drezner's the man.

He's an attorney, what case law does he have relating to unlawful
combatants. Have you seen the trouble we've had getting Moussaoi
to trial, imagine that 1,000 fold. Do you insist they be held under
the UNCHR rules, then we can't do anything with them; and the
enemy will not reciprocate About Mohammed al Quahtani, #1,
to distinguish him from the Al Quaim bomber, and the Bagram
escapee, how would you deal with him. Rasul and Hamdi, were so
poorly sourced on the relevant caselaw, as to send the clerks back
to night school (re Merryman, Qurin, Eisentrager; Youngstown was
about an ancillary matter) the detainees at Abu Ghraib, camp Bucca, et al; are a more difficult matter, because of our abiding by
the obligations of occupation law; but there the problem isn't clear
cut, either.

Then I'll reprise the question I posed to Dan:

They opened the door to a little bit of torture, and a whole lot of torture walked in. As the people in charge knew or absolutely should have known it would.

So, Dan (et al.), at what point does this cruelty and abuse become systemic? For a person who self-identifies with the conservative side of the American spectrum, are there values that trump loyalty to the Republican party and the person of George W. Bush? When do they come into play?
