June 13, 2006Tales from the TropicsTime is tight these days, but sometimes another blogger writes it up just like you would have so you don't need to.... Posted by Gregory at June 13, 2006 04:04 AM | TrackBack (0)Comments
With all due respect, Greg, the idea that three potential jihadis would simultaneously kill themselves as an act of 4th gen. warfare, to get a big splash on the front pages of western newspapers and further their political goals, deserves to be taken seriously. It may have been despair on their part; on the other hand it may have been something else entirely. After 9/11 we heard a lot about "failure of imagination" - who would have thought such a thing could happen ? How is immediately poo-poohing the idea that this was an act of asymmetric warfare anything but a similar failure ? In other news: Today the White House announced that 1). WAR IS PEACE!, 2). FREEDOM IS SLAVERY! and reminded the country that it is for our own good that BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!!! We better nip this in the bud quickly, or "potential jihadis" all over the world will start killing themselves and we'll be in a heap of trouble. Posted by: Dan at June 13, 2006 05:53 PM | Permalink to this commentThis is one of those situations where the partisan sides are lining up, and probably both missing the truth. The pro-Bush side wants to claim "Nothing wrong in Guantanamo. No torture. Not bad at all." The Anti-Bush side says: "They killed themselves out of despair! " To both sides .... Puhleeeez! The Jihadis at Guantanamo (and there are a number amongst the mistaken identity cases) were prepared to wage holy war against America. The only way left to do that now is to kill themselves and generate the predictable media reaction. Of course, the only thing they can hurt now is our already damaged reputaton. Nevertheless, Guantanamo is pretty clearly not Geneva compliant, nor is it intended to be. Our enemies will call attention to that as much as they can. The best way to solve that problem is get our practices back in line with our ideals, and stop thinking geneva should not apply to a mighty (and mighty good) nation like ourselves. |
