Will Self wrote a story called "The Quantity Theory of Insanity", which suggested that in any group of persons (up to and including the entire world), there was a natural cumulative level of insanity, and that if a few individuals became more insane, that would decrease the general level of neurosis of the rest of the group.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
