It's 1974 All Over Again!

It's 1974 All Over Again!

Katrina vanden Heuvel espies "rumblings of impeachment." John Dean, (who swallowed the "Guardian/Wolfy/sea of oil" flim-flam lock, stock and barrel-- and still hasn't issued a correction) used the "I" word too. And another Dean (Howard), everyone's favorite dark horse '04 Dem, has been trotting out (you guessed it): ''What did the president know, and when did he know it?".

Here's what Dubya has to say about the WMD issue. Powell and Condi are strongly behind the President on this issue as well (and they're non-Straussians to boot!). Let's all collect ourselves and be patient-- we are only two months into the WMD hunt. There will be plenty of time for recriminations later (even closer to the election Dems out there can console themselves) if no WMD turns up. But we can't conclude that just yet.

And so breathless talk of "rumblings of impeachment" reminds me of an old Marx quote: "Hegel remarks somewhere that all great historical facts and personages occur as it were twice. He forgets to add: the first time as tragedy, the second as farce." And didn't the farce already take place during the low, escapist decade of Monica?
